Visits to the Opera lead to Life in Art Derek’s story begins in 1944, at Stoke Newington Central School with regular school visits to Sadlers Wells.  The theatrical experience made a strong impression on him and on his return to school he would paint the scenes as he remembered them.
Derek painted with powder paints using hogshair brushes on grey sugar paper.  Luckily he had a very good art teacher who would allow him to receive extra lessons in her class.  With her help and the foresight of the headmaster, Captain Jones, Derek was able to obtain an entrance examination to St. Martins School of Art in London where he obtained a place at the school (1946-1948).
Being a Londoner from the East End, Derek regularly showed his paintings at the annual East End Academy at the Whitechapel Art Gallery and successfully sold a number of them.
In January this year Derek was afforded a one man show at The Castle, Wellingborough, exhibiting a range of his abstract paintings in oils, acrylics and mixed media.  The exhibition was very well received and created a good deal of local publicity for his abstract work for which he is known at county level.
